COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Clinton College women's basketball team pulled off a quality win with a 55-50 victory on the road at NAIA foe Columbia College (S.C.) on Monday evening.
Columbia got off to a good start leading 14-7 after the first quarter before extending it to a 10-point lead at 24-14. However, a 10-4 second-quarter-run from the golden Bears then saw the Koalas lead by just four points at the break, 28-24.
In the third, the Koalas would go up by nine at 39-30 with under five minutes to play in the period. However, Clinton would outscore the Koalas 9-4 to trail by just four heading into the fourth (39-43). Clinton would then step up their defense in the fourth quarter holding Columbia to just 7 points in outscoring them 16-7 to grab the win.
The Koalas struggled shooting the ball all evening going just 25% from the floor and only 8% from three knocking down just two from deep. Clinton shot 38.5% overall and nearly 45% from three making the difference in the end. The Bears also forced the Koalas into 23 turnovers while recording 11 steals, nine blocks and 60 total rebounds.
Clinton was led by junior shooting guard Icesis Nwafor ,pictured below on defense, as she went 5 for 5 from the floor including four 3-pointers to tally 14 points with 5 rebounds and a block. Senior guard Jabrica Leslie led the Bears with 15 points on the night along with 8 rebounds, two assists and three steals. Junior forward Alesha Canady posted 11 points, 8 rebounds and a block as well while freshman guard Ry'Naisha Barnes had 9 points, six rebounds, four steals and three assists.
Clinton is now 4-6 on the season and will next enjoy the holiday break before getting back on the court in January to host NCCAA region foe Pensacola Christian (FL) at 5:00 pm on the 8th.
